Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning the 'science of life'. Ayurveda dates back to nearly 5000 years. It is an art of healthy living that encompasses all phases of life, body, mind and spirit.
As a science of self-healing, Ayurveda encompasses diet and nutrition, lifestyle, exercise and meditation, medicinal herbs along with cleansing and rejuvenation programs for healing body, mind and spirit. Healing herbs are important in Ayurveda. They contain a blend of carefully selected herbs known for the ability to strengthen the physiology and balance of the mind. Ayurvedic medicine makes use of almost everything in nature and uses only natural ingredients using thousands of herbs and herbal formulas.

According to Ayurveda the source of all existence is universal cosmic consciousness. We are microcosms of the macrocosmic universe and within the universe exist five basic elements; ether, air, fire, earth and water. It is these five great elements that combine into three aspects referred to as the doshas.

Vata – ether and air
Pitta – fire and water
Kapha – water and earth

In our bodies, these three doshas are present in every cell, tissue and organ. Everyone has all of these three doshas but one of them is usually primary, one secondary and the third least prominent. When in balance they create health and harmony. When out of balance they are the cause of illness and disease. Keeping these three in balance is the key to staying healthy. Stress, negative thoughts, feeling disconnected, wrong food choices and lack of excerise are just some of the things that throw us out of balance.

An Ayurvedic physician will identify a persons disorder in terms of their qualities and setting right any imbalances. This can be done by adjusting your lifestyle, diet, exercise, massage and so on. Massage and healing will greatly benefit any one giving them a kick start towards a more balanced and healthy lifestyle.
